Tarentula Hispanica…the Dancing Remedy

Tarentula is a deep and long acting medicine. Those who are bitten by this poisonous spider develop the dancing mania, ‘the Tarantism’. Hence it is rightly called as ‘the dancing remedy’. The nervous manifestations of this remedy are almost indescribable and too numerous to mention. Cardiac anxiety and restlessness prevails through all the conditions.

Trembling and jerking convulsions. It has an appearance very much like st. Vitus’ Dance and hence has cured chorea when it was better from music. Great anxiety, restlessness and constant motion of the arms, the legs, the head and the trunk with inability to do anything. Very sensitive to music. It relieves nearly all the symptoms but sometimes it excites violently. Extreme sexual desire leading to mania. When choreic symptoms are present he can run better than he walk.
The indications better remembered by totality:

T - Tarantism
A - Anxiety
R - Restlessness
E - Emaciation
N - Nervous irritability
T -Trembling
U - Uncontrollable sexual desire
L - Lascivious
A - Aversion to red, green and black colours.

Spiderman! Spiderman!!

‘Spiderman, Spiderman, friendly neighbourhood spiderman’. Aaah! If only they had webs to swing from. Forever RESTLESS, forever ALL OVER THE PLACE. This remedy is indicated when there is EXTREME RESTLESSNESS; must be constantly on the move, although motion aggravates.

To quote a clinical tip from Dr. Mohamed. Aleem - chennai, he says, you know a Tarentula when they enter the clinic. They are constantly fidgety, sitting on the chair this moment & on the couch the next, checking out your flashlight, your pen and whatever available around the whole room.

Here, an interesting tip from Dr.D.P.Rastogi- Delhi, that with this restless behaviour, a liking for music, and the scale tips in favour of Tarentula, but if they don’t care much for music, the scale tips in favour of Stramonium. Often, we find, that they come from an environment with very strict behaviour and restrictions, or where the mother has played a very dominant role, controlling every emotional and even the basic physical needs like eating, touching, going for stool and urinating, so much so that finally a state results where all these strong energies erupt like a volcano- expressive and even violent. Here springs the sexual erethism of Tarentula.

They need to show, in public, how much they are suffering and who is responsible for this, as a kind of revenge that they take. In this sense they can become quite malicious and may constantly disturb others with very annoying behaviour, or with their physical symptomatology. It is of great value in Chronic And Acute Upper And Lower Respiratory Infections, The most Obstinate Constipation, Suppurating skin infections viz carbuncles, furuncles etc, Hysteria with Chlorosis, Chorea, Spinal Irritation and Dysmenorrhoea, but mind you, all with the background temperament of Tarentula “Restlessness”. A note by Dr. Aleem on the constipation- no urge for days and finally the stools are passed sheerly due to the weight of its accumulation. Hard stools causing pain so as to start the vicious cycle of fear and constipation– note the annoying behaviour and the desperate attempts of the mother at toilet training. Dr. P.V.Venkatraman says on Tarentula “ if mothers say that it is difficult for them to make their children sit in the toilet for few minutes. The restlessness here also”.

A small note on the different patho-physiology of the two Tarentulae:- The Tarantula Hispanica, native of South America, and introduced into our Materia Medica by the well - known Dr. Nunez, of Madrid, Spain, is a nervous remedy, acting deeply and powerfully on the cerebro - spinal system; and many cases of chorea, hysteria, etc., have been cured by the precious agent. “Tarantula Cubensis”, on the other hand, seems to be a toxaemic remedy, acting directly on the blood, and is in this way an analogue of Crotalus, Apis, Arsenicum, etc.

Tarentula seems to be quite a benefiting remedy for today’s youngsters who are quite restless, fidgety, and aggressive a lot, enjoying living to the rhythm of music. Let us give the “Spiderman” a chance to restore the friendly neighbourhood.

The Malingering Tarentula

Dr. Jagadha

High nervousness, irritability and restlessness are the keynotes of my prescription for Tarentula Hispanica. Restlessness and nervousness in all the actions. Malingering - quiet when alone and restless or irritable in the presence of others or when observed.

The problem in one area is reflected in a different location mostly as a nervous symptom is the guiding light (e.g.) Headache during menses or after coition. It has helped in women who avoid conception by safe period method or withdrawal method and end up in headache. It’s my favorite in ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactive disorder) cases. Now days we find this problem in steep rise and Tarentula hispanica is highly helpful. It clears the tendency to eat raw rice when symptoms agree thus helping in treating anemia. It is also useful in cases of itching in genitalia after menses.
