In Hahnemann's words,"the true natural chronic diseases are those that arise from a chronic miasm, when left to themselves, improper treatment, go on to increase, growing worse and torment the patient to the end of his life." -Aphorism 78 Organon Hahnemann spent 12 years of his life investigating miasms, collecting proof to these findings going unnoticed by others in the medical professions, "the chronic diseases" was written.

The miasms are: Psora, Sycosis, Syphilis. Psora, the mother of all diseases goes back the farthest in human history. Psora or "itch" is the monstrous internal chronic miasm, the only real fundamental cause and producer of all the other numerous forms of disease.

This word Psora, which Hahnemann used to denote the third great miasm, is defined by the modern medical dictionary as follows:
I. Scabies. 2. Psoriasis. 3. Hahnemann's term for the "itch dyscrasia," defined as the parent of all chronic disease-skin diseases, neoplasm, insanity, etc.; it was similar to, though of more extended application than, the "herpetic diathesis" of French writers.

Psora is that most ancient, most universal, most destructive, and yet most misapprehended chronic miasmatic disease which for many thousands of years has disfigured and tortured mankind, and which during the last centuries has become the mother of all the thousands of incredibly various (acute and) chronic (non-venereal) diseases, by which the whole civilized human race on the inhabited globe is being more and more afflicted.

Psora is the oldest miasmatic chronic disease known to us. Just as tedious as syphilis and sycosis, and therefore not to be extinguished before the last breath of the longest human life, unless it is thoroughly cured, since not even the most robust constitution is able to destroy and extinguish it by its own proper strength, Psora, or the Itch disease, is beside this the oldest and most hydra-headed of all the chronic miasmatic diseases. So great a flood of numberless nervous troubles, painful ailments, spasms, ulcers (cancers), adventitious formations, dyscrasias, paralysis, consumptions and crippling of soul, mind and body were never seen in ancient times when the Psora mostly confined itself to its dreadful cutaneous symptom, leprosy. Only during the last few centuries has mankind been flooded with these infirmities, owing to the causes just mentioned. It was thus that Psora became the most universal mother of chronic diseases.

Psora has passed on through hundreds of generations of people and has produced an innumerable variety of defects, injuries, derangements, and sufferings.Hahnemann wrote in a footnote in "chronic diseases" about the third book of Moses (Leviticus) where the word Psora is mentioned, given to eruptive diseases. The miasms run through our history from the beginning. (Greek = psora = itch).

The psora, which is now so easily and so rashly robbed of its ameliorating cutaneous symptom, the eruption of itch, which acts vicariously for the internal disease, has been producing within the last three hundred years more and more secondary symptoms, and indeed so many that at least seven-eighths of all the chronic maladies spring from it as their only source, while the remaining eighth springs from syphilis and sycosis or from a complication of two of these three miasmatic chronic diseases, or (which is rare) from a complication of all three of them .

Hahnemann found, that many chronic ailments which are enumerated in pathological works under distinct names, originate, with few exceptions, in this widely ramified psora. All skin manifestations and conditions; almost all adventitious formations such as swelling of the glands, sarcomatous and carcinomatous tumours; deformed bony structures; hemorrhagic tendencies; all suppurations; functional disturbances; nutritional disturbances; all of the acute disease manifestations; all these conditions Hahnemann traced to this source and classified under the head of psora.

In this modern scenario, we see numerous diseases come under the name of psora. For example, Acidity, burning, cancer, sarcomas, constipation, epilepsy, flatulence, hoarseness, itching of skin, leprosy, burning of spinal cord, watery discharge from nose and eyes with burning.

The homoeopathic physician, by taking into consideration the psoric background, will bring into play the remedies that are related in their symptomatology to these psoric states, and he will be able to do most effective work.

Now we know the importance of eliciting the psoric background in each and every case. Some might say as long as one prescribes according to the law of similia he cures his cases. The fact is we cannot select the most similar remedy unless we understand the phenomena of the acting miasm. The true similia is always based on the existing miasm. It makes the difference between fighting the disease in the dark and in bright light.

If we can know nothing about the traits and characteristics of our enemy, it's impossible to wage war against the disease.

So its in we homoeopaths hand to control this hydra headed monster and relieve the sufferings of poor fellow human being.
