Millefolium…history
|
 |
|
The
Latin name, Millefolium, means ‘thousand leaf’. The common
name ‘yarrow’ derives from the Anglo-Saxon name for the plant,
‘gearwe’. The genus name, Achillea, honors the Greek hero
Achilles, who is said to have used Millefolium on the battlefield to staunch
the bleeding of his men’s wounds. Yarrow is also a traditional women’s
herb, used to ease |
menstruation.
The leaves are medicinally strongest
just before flowering, and the flowers are stronger than the leaves. Conversely
it was believed to be one of the Devil’s herbs, and was used in
divination. It was also said to cause nosebleeds if a leaf was put into
the nostril, and the plant was known as ‘nosebleed’ in some
areas.
Externally, Millefolium is
styptic (stops bleeding), astringent (makes tissue contract), antiseptic
(inhibits bacterial growth), vulnerary (helps tissue heal), anti-inflammatory,
and possibly anesthetic.
Millefolium is expectorant,
carminative, , hemostatic, astringent, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory,
antispasmodic, analgesic, stimulant, and emmenagogue. Modern science has
identified well over a hundred active biological compounds in this plant.
Among the more notable are achilleine (hemostatic), apigenin, azulene
(anti-inflammatory), camphor, coumarin, inulin, menthol, quercetin, rutin,
salicylic acid, and thujone (neurotoxic). |

Gynaecological cases |

This remedy is less frequently
used because it’s poorly understood. I have used in cases
of Menorrhagia with fibroid, particularly in sub serous types or
bulky uterus or in cases of dysfunctional uterine bleeding with
great success. I have also had success in cases of nose bleeding.
When the indicated remedy does not seem to act in high fever cases
,mother tincture 10 drops 3hourly brings down the temperature.

Millefolium
- A Homoeopathic Haemostatic
|
 |
|
Millefolium
is widely known for its Haemorrhagic power. Haemorrhages from any part,
from wounds, from ulcers, bleeding is characteristically bright red and
is persistent. It can be introduced as a prophylactic before a surgical
procedure, tooth extraction or during confinement, in those individuals
with a History of bleeding. It retards the flow. Hemorrhagic |
tendency of millefolium has
clinically produced results in haematuria due to acute glomerulonephritis,
infective endocarditis, malignant hypertension, polyrteritis nodosa, or
systemic lupos erythematosus affecting kidney, rental tuberculosis, haemorrhagic
disease, renal infarction, trauma to kidneys, urinary calculi and beningn
prostatic hypertrophy.
Haematemesis due to chronic gastric
and duodenal ulcer, oesophageal varices, cancer of stomach, other tumours
such as leiomyoma, stress ulcer and bleeding disorder. Haemoptysis due
to acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchial carcinoma, pulmonary infarction,
bron chiectasis, and pulmonary tuberculosis. It has also proved to be
a wonderful remedy for Epistaxis (nose bleed) as has been highlighted
in many of the ancient books, used by great physicians.
Millefolium is primarily a Women’s
remedy. Profuse menses, continuous, bright red blood are its characteristics.
Bleeding due to abortion, during labour or post partum haemorrhage, bleeding
piles, varicose veins during pregnancy, millefolium ranks supreme. Other
closely related drugs are Erigeron and Trillium, but millefolium is the
only one of the three that has seemed to have produced haemorrhages in
its pathogenesis. |

use mother tinctures in my practice, however millefolium in mother
tincture gives me excellent result in uterine bleeding…or
whatever the bleeding. The peculialrity is noted it works without
expected symptoms, Bright red or painless Haemorrage… the
key symptoms of the drug.

Millefolium

|
It is
one of the greatest Anti-Haemorrhagic Remedies in the homoeopathic Materia
Medica. It is immensely helpful in ailments due to over lifting, too much
physical exertion and a fall. When considering the haemorrhagic tendency,
in young women, who has prolonged, profuse, bright red bleeding with less
clots Millefolium arrested the bleeding in about
|
2-3days completely.
In another case of menopausal bleeding which
lasted for several weeks, again Millefolium arrested the bleeding in 2-3days.
In a lady of 30 years menorrhagia after too much physical exertion and
travelling Millefolium helped in arresting the bleeding..
All the above cases were given Millefolium 1M
only. High potency is more effective in menorrhagia rather than the lower
potencies or mother tincture. Though all cases of menorrhagia cannot be
treated by this remedy but in one of the cases where the bleeding was
continuous for more than 15 days, when Thlaspi bursa pastoris and Sabina
failed, Millefolium 1M in water doses for 2days arrested the bleeding
and brought the patient to normal.
When considering the haemorrhagic tendency,
in a patient who came after hysterectomy, with bleeding from the incised
wound prolonged for about a month Millefolium arrested the bleeding and
healed the ulcer perfectly.
Millefolium is highly useful in patients with
persistently very high temperature. One of my colleague is using Millefolium
in all viral fever cases with high rise of temperature as a specific and
has very good result. It is not only useful in various types of viral
fevers but also in dreadful diseases like leptospirosis.
I like to mention about two of my leptospirosis
cases with high rise of temperature. In one case the suffusion of the
eyes indicated MILLEFOLIUM. In another case, haemorrhage from rectum called
for MILLEFOLIUM. In both the cases 30th potency not only stopped the bleeding
but also brought down the temperature and the blood reports to normal. |

Active Bleeding

Dr.Subramanium |
|
Millefolium is an excellent drug for hemorrhages
particularly in petachial Haemorrahages, Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding…active
bleeding, bright red and painless. A Sabina
patient oozes out with physical exertion, where as the millefolium
patients’ “spitting of the Blood” is a notable
feature. The potency, I prefer in many cases 6th in frequent doses,
sometimes in water doses.

Threatened
Abortion

I
was called over phone to attend a pregnant woman with bleeding. She is
pregnant for three months, had sudden bleeding per vagina. The bleeding
was bright red and painless. I thought immediately that it could be miscarriage,
but the symptoms painless and bright red dragged me to think the possibilities
in implantation. I ruled out the vaginal and cervical irritations.
|
|
The crowds around her suggested the family members
to admit to a nursing home. However her family members consented to treat
her since this happened three times earlier, which ended in miscarriage.
I observed the patient is not at all anxious. I just referred Boreicke
Clinical Repertory, which I always carry in my hand. I prescribed Millefolium
and advised them to give every ten minutes. The patient slept for three
hours and then got in to the bathroom. She reported that there was no
bleeding at all. I left their house and none of them approached after.
I thought that she had aborted, but after three years she came to me for
an acute complaint with her child.
The anxiety makes great difference between Aconite
and Millefolium. If the same time of bleeding. We can think Haemamelis
in venous hemorrhages. |
