This presentation was made at Excellence 2005 seminar held at chennai. S.P.Abirami, the student of Shree sairam Homoeopathy Medical College, Chennai has won First prize for her poster presentation.

A warm greeting to one and all present here!. I am Abirami S.P present here to present my topic on iatrogenic diseases. Let me have a few minutes in presenting my slides.

A deep impact! Yes, the impact here is between the violent heroic medicines versus human beings and I would consider this impact is going to be even more dangerous and vigorous than the impact that caused the 9/11, attack over the twin tower! Iatrogenic diseases. It is actually derived from a Greek word where iatro means physician and genesis means production. As per definition it is an adverse mental or physical condition induced in a patient through the effects of the treatment by physician or a surgeon or it can also be considered as the maltreatment by a physician or a surgeon. Yes, these adverse drug reactions occur in at least 5% of the hospitalized patients. No matter what the clinical situation. It is the sole responsibility of the physician in rendering the cure to the patient and the physician should be knowing about the dangerous action about the drug its beneficial action it has caused etc.

And in an iatrogenic disorder, the deleterious effects of the therapeutic or a diagnostic maneuver causes pathology independent of the condition for which the intervention was performed and as an example or an evidence many nosocomial infection have been identified like Streptococcal, Staphylococoal and Aspergillus, Letiunella and many other clinical adverse reactions have been identified and these infections it is so difficult for me to quote. Then think about the bad effects faced by a patient who is already in the bed and I assure you all that.if I am going to speak about all these infections in a hospitalized patient you will definitely run away from bed and another evidence is the dangerous effects of certain drugs. They are not free form the side effects and in order to quote all these side effects they occupy more than a page full.

Yes, let us have a small commercial break, What is happening nowadays the commonest propaganda nowadays used is buy one and get one free. This is not only in the case of the shoe or the jeans we wear. It is also in the case of the medicines, which we buy. We not only buy a medicine to cure a particular effect. They are all multi speciality drugs they go not only with curing a particular disease condition, they go on killing other parts of the body. There are so many infections and systemic antimicrobials given for other purposes which streaks only for the first four days of catheterization after which resistant bacteria or yeast emerge as pathogens. We can find many a patients who have developed cardiac neurosis because of the misinterpreted finding of the heart murmur by the own physician. How to treat on this condition? This goes with when the vital force is not weakened much by these harmful practices, or the disease condition is not progressed further we can just leave the condition to the vital force itself because nothing is going to happen more than our own vital force and the vital force will heal it by itself provided it is left undisturbed for several years. Health is now becoming the unaffordable wealth nowadays, it is a very difficult property to be acquired by us.

So, I thus conclude my speech by saying that the physician’s high and only mission is to promote good health, prevent ill health, cure the sick and rehabilitate the disadvantaged.
