Kerala Doctors to launch stir against Government Order

KOTTAYAM.JUNE.20: A government order (GO) which came out the other day relaxing the norms to enable unqualified homoeopathy and traditional Ayurveda Practitioners in the Malabar region and traditional Siddha practitioners in the Travancore- Cochin region to continue with their vocation, has evoked instant protest from qualified hands. The controversial GO ( MS 145/09 dated June 6, 2009) ensures that mandatory registration is not needed for anyone who had attained 21 years, within a cut-off period of November 2, 1987 and who had been practising traditional systems in the specified regions ‘without any complaints from the part of the general public’.
The emerging situation is an affront to the thousands of doctors in various streams strenuously coming out of regular medical colleges in the state every year by gaining admissions with high score in Plus-II overcoming the highly competitive entrance hurdle. The situation also poses a threat to quality medicare and creates a chaotic quacks’ roaming situation, warned the functionaries of Homeo SasthraVedi at a news conference here on Tuesday.
Also, the content of the GO clearly goes against Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970, which bars unqualified hands from practising any stream of medicine, they added.
Already in the homeo front alone, an estimated 18,000 unqualified hands are there in the state, most of them in the Malabar region, against a total 12,000 qualified doctors, pointed out Vedi chairman Dr T N Parameswara Kurup, general secretary Dr S Sarith Kumar and middle zone secretary Dr Binoy S Vallabhasseri.
Granting licence for medical profession on the basis of age without considering qualification is unheard of in any state.
There is every reason to believe that large-scale corruption has taken place in an apparent deal to facilitate the GO, they alleged and added that the matter would be taken up at all levels and an agitation would be launched against it.

Madras High court reserves order on dress code for women students

CHENNAI.JUNE.16: The Madras High Court has reserved orders on a petition filed by an internee V.Kamalam, Venkateswara Homoeopathy Medical College challenging the dress code that all women undergoing the one-year internship training were required to wear only sarees.

She sought a direction to the management of Venkateswara Homoeopathic Medical College on the city outskirts to permit her to attend the internship wearing salwar kameez or kurta or churidar with a duppatta. She said that from November 11 last she was not being permitted to continue her internship, which commenced on October 4, for refusing to wear a saree. She had passed the Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery at the same institution and had applied for internship at the same college which was granted to her by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai. She also sought a court direction forbearing the college from imposing the ‘non prescribed dress code’ claiming it was discriminatory and a violation of Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution. She said that she had tried to explain to the college authorities that she had never used a saree, but to no avail.

Pointing out that since its establishment the college had laid down a dress code for men and women students undergoing internship, the college Principal in his counter affidavit submitted that the rule was being strictly followed by all such students, denying the charge of discrimination.

Justice K Venkataraman reserved the orders yesterday, after a counter-affidavit filed by the institution, defending its Saree-only dress code for women interns at its college. At the time of arguments, Justice Venkataraman asked the petitioner’s woman counsel, that ‘your are also wearing saree and attending the court’. - PTI
