Diabetes and High blood pressure are the most common problems which are suffered by the large class of society. In our daily practice, we always face that       type of patients. Whenever we are going to treat that patients, few questions arise in our mind.

      1) May we stop the allopathic medicines which they are already taking to reduce BP or Glucose level?

      2) What will be the line of treatment i.e,either palliative or by taking totality of symptoms and choose a remedy?

       Dear Dr. Barbhuyan,
Your’s is a very pertinent and common dilemma arising in Homoeopaths, young and old. The answer to this can be divided into two:

       a. For those patients coming straight away to a Homoeopath on detection of hypertension or diabetes mellitus, the treatment can be started straight away with a thorough Homoeopathic case taking and medicine based on the totality of symptoms. However, in case the BP or Blood sugar levels are very much elevated, you may consider seeking the aid of relevant specialists in modern medicine to bring the levels to a reasonable level and proceeding with Homoeopathy further.

       b. In case of patients already under modern medication for the said diseases it would definitely be risky to abruptly withdraw the medications they are currently on. The treatment approach from our side should be based on the totality of symptoms but withdrawal of the other drugs should be cautiously handled. In case of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, total withdrawal from insulin may not be possible.

Having said this, I am not undermining the value of “pathological” prescriptions and mother tinctures in the control of these diseases but please remember that they are purely of a palliative nature, however prolonged and sustained the palliation may be.

Regards and best wishes for success in all you treat.
